An exhibition about the necessity of paying attention to pain
This exhibition is motivated by the desire to make pain visible in our society. In my experience, pain is often not given an appropriate place, even though it is an essential part of human life. The exhibition attempts to view pain not only as an individual experience, but also as a social phenomenon that needs to be given space.
The book Betrachtung von Schmerz is at the center of the exhibition. It serves as a basis and examines the various facets of pain, taking into account biological, psychological and social aspects, while the clear and classic design of the book forms the framework for the in-depth content.
It is preceded by a personal experience that introduces the work on the book and exhibition: 92 hours of conscious silence. This experience serves as a preface to the book and sets the framework for a more in-depth examination of the pain.
The 92 pages of the book, consisting of only the simple but powerful word AUA, reflect the difficulty of putting pain into words and give the reader an immediate insight into the challenges of communicating pain. The open back binding of the book emphasizes the vulnerability we face when it comes to expressing and dealing with pain.
Videos documenting personal experiences with pain are an elementary part of the exhibition.
The videos engage in a dialog with each other. They show the different ways of dealing with pain, the contrasting relationship to that pain.
Visual symbol for the tendency to suppress pain instead of understanding and accepting it.
